David has recently given Sintel an updated rig (with cool IK controls!). This is good news, but it also means a lot of our animations are going to have to be re-done. Instead of spending my month re-doing them to a half decent level, I thought it would be a good idea to let the community contribute to the project by helping out with the animation.

That is where you guys come in! Bellow is a link to the Sintel rig blend file. It also comes with instructions and a rig layer guide. What we are asking is that you either improve the current animations that are in the file, or make your own! Its up to you.


Suggested Animations

High-priority animations:

  • Run cycle
  • Running with staff
  • Walk cycle
  • Walking with staff
  • Various attack animations
  • Idle cycle
  • Idle with staff
  • Leaping (jumping while running)
  • Death (nothing too violent)
  • Low-priority animations:

  • Picking up an object
  • Sitting (on a chair)
  • Day dreaming (idle)
  • Jumping
  • Conversation
  • Waving to someone

    Use the latest stable version of Blender 2.58


    Notes

    If you don’t see an animation you want to do, be creative! Anything helps.

    When you are done, upload the BLEND file to blendswap.com with the tag “sintelgame” (no quotes)

    Also: send us an email with a URL LINK to the hosted blend file to jon@sintelgame.org

    You can use other hosting as long as the URL is sent to us.

    Anyone who contributes will get their name in the final game’s credits, even if we end up using the animation or not.

      Out of interest, why are you not using rigify? Does it not work well in BGE?

      Hi Pjoe

      The reason we did not use rigify to generate her rig, was because at the beginning of the project we were using a very simple bone set up, purely to get things up and running quickly. As we progressed we have gradually appended new features to the rig as we needed them. (this allowed us to make alterations to the rig with out needing to rework all the scripts and animation associated with her) not the best way to make an in game rig by any means but at the time it seemed the most effective way for us to move forward.
      There are a number of NPC’s that will need rigging soon so I’m sure we will look into rigify then. As far as I’m aware there is no reason why rigify could not be used with the BGE.

      The 3dviewr is quite cool by the way.

      Yeah sometimes blender is moving so fast, it’s hard to keep up with everything. I’ve been using game sintel to test the latest COLLADA export stuff. There is still some manual tweaks needed before it exports correctly, but I hope we can get those more automatic.

      P.S. Rig is awful. Especially shoulder controls. Look at her hips – they sink into the body!

      Hi boys and girls! It me again.
      Today I tried to do “Run Cycle with Staff”. And I report – without IK-arms it is impossible to do with decent quality.
      Waiting for reworked rig…

      I think it is the best way to learn – to participate open projects.
      And it is pity that nobody answers. Is this project alive?
      Well… I am opened for proposals and critiques.

    10. I thing there should be special attack like throwing the staff to enemy to fall him… Or She must use the staff more.
